Food Tourist:- Vedic Hyde Review

The term Vedic in Sanskrit dates back to ancient literature and has a basic meaning of ‘Knowledge’, and Rahul who runs Vedic in Hyde definitely has plenty of that.

Born in the Kingdom of Bhutan, but brought up in India, before travelling to Europe and the UK, Rahul uses his vast knowledge of Indian and Indo-Chinese flavours, to create a varied Vegan and Vegetarian menu. You don’t have to be a vegetarian or vegan to enjoy a veg based restaurant though, as Vedic has dishes that would delight even the hardest of meat eaters.

The small local restaurant is based on Market Street in Hyde and alongside its dishes, offers up a family felt level of hospitality, with Rahul not only cooking up some fantastic dishes, but popping out of the kitchen to check with diners and to say hello.

We popped in to sample some of the delights available to guests of Vedic, and we were somewhat astounded by the variety of different dishes available.

Alongside your usual curry dishes, including Chana Masala, Vegetable, paneer and tofu, there are a selection of starters, sides and speciality plates.

Starters vary from familiar onion bhajis and aloo tikki’s, through to vegetable koftas and vegan coconut patties, which were all incredibly tasty.

If you are unsure what to order, then I would highly recommend the Vedic special sizzler platter, which at just £13.99 serves up a massive selection of different things to try, all of which leave you wishing you had space for more.

From South India, there are dosa’s in different forms, or a cheese masala uttapam, a lentil and rice pancake, which is topped with cheese, onion and potatoes, which as well as being a flavour delight, also happens to be gluten free.

Indo-Chinese dishes include various Manchurian options, to Chilli or Sesame paneer.

Rahul also likes to highlight some of the vegetables from the clay oven grill, including Tandoori Mushrooms or Broccoli, to a kebab made from green vegetables, which isn’t only delicious but also healthy.

All of the dishes can be served with sides of rice, homemade breads, or if you really want, chips.

Prices are also incredibly good, with not one dish except the sharing platter, being over £10. Most starters are around £5.95 and most mains around £9.25.

Vedic is located at 21 Market Street Hyde, but also do takeaway and delivery, check them out here.
