Nestled in the charming town of Rochdale, within the stunning Town Hall, sits Martlet Kitchen. Amongst other delights, Martlet Kitchen offers a set menu Sunday lunch experience, which I just needed to go and check out.
As you walk through the historical town hall, with its high wooden beams and glorious tiled floor, you know that you are somewhere special. A short stroll though some of this beautiful building, and you soon step into an inviting eatery, with the rustic decor and friendly atmosphere instantly setting the stage for a relaxing afternoon, away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

The moment you enter Martlet Kitchen, you’re greeted by a blend of soft lighting and wooden accents that create a cozy, welcoming vibe. The chatter of fellow diners and the tantalising aroma wafting from the kitchen add to the charm, making it an ideal spot for a family gathering or a casual meal with friends. The open layout also allows for natural light to flood in through the large stone framed windows, enhancing the inviting feel and making the space feel alive with energy.
Service here exudes warmth and attentiveness. The staff at Martlet Kitchen approach their work with a genuine passion for hospitality, offering a smile and a friendly chat without delay. From the moment you are seated, the team ensures that you feel looked after, without being intrusive.
The Sunday lunch menu at Martlet Kitchen is a celebration of traditional British fare, expertly elevated with a modern twist. The star of the show is undoubtedly the roast, which features beautifully cooked meats seasoned to perfection. Whether you choose beef, chicken, lamb or one of the vegetarian option, each dish is complemented by a selection of sides, but more of that later.

First up starters, and who could ever resist a Bury black pudding Scotch egg. Cooked so the yolk was still a little oozing, it was a little indulgent on the palette, and paired perfectly with the homemade piccalilli which offered a welcoming sharpness, which cut through savoury flavours perfectly.

Now to the main show, and all the main options are served with a fluffy Yorkshire pudding, creamed potato, seasonal greens and honey glazed carrots, along with seasoned hassleback potatoes, which for me were a nice change front standard roast potatoes.

The presentation is thoughtful, with each component arranged artfully on the plate, making it as pleasing to the eyes as it is to the palate. The flavours are rich and heartfelt, evoking. Accompanying this feast, the ample gravy helped to enhance every bite.

Finally, no Sunday lunch is complete without a sweet note, and Martlet Kitchen does not disappoint. The dessert menu is a treasure trove of indulgence, featuring classic options like sticky toffee pudding and decadent cheesecakes, all crafted in-house. Each dessert is a sweet melody that lingers delightfully, providing a perfect conclusion to the meal.

For drinks, there is a good selection of wine, beers and soft drinks, as well as some good spirit choices. One that stood out, was a Town Hall Gin, made locally by the rather talented Defiance Distillery.
In the heart of Rochdale, Martlet Kitchen transforms Sunday lunch into a cherished tradition and a delightful gathering spot. It’s not just a meal; it’s an experience that resonates with warmth, flavour, and a true sense of community, with a number of families enjoying their Sunday while we were there. As you leave, you’ll find yourself looking forward to the next visit, where each Sunday can become a new memory waiting to unfold.
If you’re in search of a relaxing and enjoyable Sunday lunch, Martlet Kitchen is a must-visit destination that promises to warm your heart and delight your taste buds.
