If you’ve ever driven through Knutsford, you probably couldn’t help but notice the large and impressive building on Toft Road.

The Old Knutsford Crown Court dates back to 1818 and was designed by renowned architect George Money Penny.

Flat Cap Hotels purchased the impressive 3 storey Georgian building back in 2016 and have been painstakingly restoring it back to its original beauty.

Earlier this year they opened Barristers, a bar and restaurant that serves both the new hotel, as well as being open to the public.

Having previously enjoyed a stunning meal at one of their sister hotels, The Bridge in Prestbury. I was delighted to be invited to try out the new menu in Barristers.

Although I had experienced the gorgeous interior when I went to Barristers for an afternoon tea, this didn’t make this visit any less impressive.

The entrance to Barristers is located to the side of the main entrance, which was looking very festive with its Christmas tree already in place.

Barristers is located in what was Court Room 2, with much of the original wood panelling still used. The walls are full of artwork, with the odd famous portrait, each with their own connection to the court/prison theme.

Sat at our table I started to peruse the new menu, which was a good read.

For starters I chose the Scallops. These were cooked perfectly, served with gorgeous Beef Shin and Red Onion Jam Doughnuts, Canellini Bean Puree and Smoked Bacon, drizzled with a red wine reduction. The Scallops went to well with the doughnuts, which are beautiful.

For main I decided to opt for Braised Lamb Shoulder, served on a Pumpkin Puree and Creamed Potato, it also had a really flavoursome Mint Jelly on the side. The presentation on both dishes so far were spot on.

I also got to try the Cod Loin, with its crispy skin and Chicken Reduction – Sat on a bed of Baby Gem, Peas, Silverkin Onions, New Potatoes and the softest Confit Chorizo.

However the presentation award has to go to the dessert of Black Forrest Gateaux, A Dark Chocolate Sponge, Cherry Cremeux and Kirsch Cherry Gel, presented beautifully as a Cherry!

The entire dinner was definitely above any expectation that I had before dining here, the service was warm, welcoming and friendly and I will definitely be looking to go back.
