Whenever you visit Morocco, you will see a number of places offering ‘hammam’s’ – but what should you expect when visiting one of these ‘wash rooms’
Hammam’s within Marrakesh offer up a number of treatments – from a simple Hammam to a full pamper session, so all in the name of reporting back, we went to try one out.
Hammam de la Rose is located within the Medina of Marrakech on Dar El Bacha, just meters from the souks and a short stroll from some of the lovely riads and hotels.
They offer a simple Hammam for 250 DHS (approx £21) which involves the heat room, rubbed down with black eucalyptus soap, a body scrub and finished with a nourishing rose oil. This treatment lasts around 30 mins.
We opted for the much longer Royal Hammam (50 Mins) – this started again with a eucalyptus soap – after changing into some rather fetching paper underwear, you are shown upstairs into a stunning octagonal room with a water font in the centre.
Hot water is then splashed all over you before the black eucalyptus soap is rubbed into your body. You then get to lay back and relax in the sauna like room as the soap cleanses the skin.
After some time you are invited to the connecting room where a full body scrub takes place using an exfoliating mitt, which once complete is followed by the application of Ghasoul clay which contains 7 plant extracts.
The mitt that is used for the exfoliation is always a new mitt, so you don’t have to worry about it being used on other people – they even give it to you at the end to take away as a momento.
A second period in the sauna follows, allowing the clay to do its job, before a final shower and application of pure Argan.
Wrapped in towel dressing gowns we were then led to a chill out area where water and mint tea are served.
This treatment costs 450 DHS (Around £37) and including the chill out, we were in there for just over an hour, leaving completely chilled and cleansed – It would be easy to get used to these.
I opted to try this Hammam purely on own research and looking around at what was on offer, their were plenty of other hammam’s available throughout the city however.
