Ulverston – Wolftown, has won a third award for its second gin expression – Wolftown Citrus Gin, just nine months after its release.

The 1-star Great Taste Award from the Guild of Fine Food, comes on the back of winning in the Flavoured Gin category at the Gin Guide Awards and a Bronze Medal at The London Spirits Competition in Spring 2022.

Founder of Wolftown, John McKeown said “We are once again delighted to announce that Wolftown Citrus Gin has gained another accolade and they don’t get more iconic than a Great Taste Award.

When you see that Great Taste logo on a product, you know it’s a mark of quality, so to be able to showcase both of our products under this banner now, is very satisfying to say the least.”
Wolftown Citrus Gin, was conceived after the disappointment of being unable to travel to Sorrento to celebrate co-founder, Helen McKeown’s birthday in 2020.

“Our first spirit was such a unique tasting gin, that we had to make something completely different, so when we couldn’t travel in 2020, we decided to bring the flavour of the Mediterranean to our next drink and packed it with fresh lemon and pink grapefruit,” said John McKeown.

The Guild of Fine Food judges commented “Bright in its citrus-forward character, with grapefruit prominent on nose and palate. We enjoyed the complexity on the palate – ratafia alongside the clear citrus zest, well melded with the botanicals. There is a silky creaminess and decent mouthfeel – very enticing.”

“This has a subtle lemony tinge to it, a fresh aroma and a light, delicate mouthfeel. The addition of tonic allows the citrus notes to flourish and the grapefruit is in perfect harmony with the flavours. This is weightier on the palate than a standard London dry and would kickstart any evening.”

“The silky creaminess mentioned by the judges is produced the addition of organic oats milled right here in Cumbria at Little Salkeld Watermill,” said John McKeown. “So while we wanted to recreate the taste of the Med, we are very proud to be using an ingredient produced right here on our doorstep, to achieve the results we wanted.”
Wolftown’s two gins are stocked and served in a wide range of stores, bars and restaurants throughout Cumbria, including in three businesses belonging to multi-Michelin starred restaurateur Simon Rogan, as well as Wolftown’s own shop and Microbar in the heart of Ulverston.

“We have been given a great deal of support from Cumbrian businesses, though additionally now, we are listed on Amazon Prime for next day delivery, so we hope this recognition from the Great Taste Awards will lead to more people across the country discovering the modern spirits we are creating,” said Founder, John McKeown.
